GROUND RULES

Setting the Table: Our Ground Rules

At a gathering where we are invited to reflect, rest, and reconnect with our deepest purposes, it’s important to create a shared understanding of how we will be together. These are not rules in the rigid sense, but gentle agreements—intentional boundaries that make space for courage, respect, and meaningful encounter.

When we host well, we design the world we want to inhabit—if only for a few days. These ground rules are our scaffolding. They are meant to support us as we explore vulnerability, resist cynicism, and nurture the fragile but vital work of renewal.

Presence: To make this retreat a success, we need your full presence this week. Practically, we will live this out in the following ways:

  • At meal times, we will…

    • Leave work behind: We will not discuss work related matters around the dining table.

    • Limit distractions: Cell phones will not be taken to dinner or used during mealtimes.

    • Engage in the prompts: At some meals, prompts will be used to drive discussion in intentional ways.

    • Connect with others: At some meals, name cards may be used to mix seating arrangements in intentional ways.

  • At our sessions and devotionals, we will…

    • Limit distractions: Cell phones will not be taken to devotionals or used during sessions.

    • Leave work behind: We will not discuss work related matters during devotionals

  • We will make space for mental presence

    • Carve out time for this, intentionally limit the other plates you are spinning during this trip

    • The retreat is a comprehensive experience. We will not opt in or out of certain elements.

  • We will not consume alcohol at the villa. This could serve as an unnecessary distraction and we do not want anything to get in the way of our primary purpose.

  • We will prepare: Readings and preparation work will be available on July 1. Please have them finished before you arrive at DFW.

Our ability to prepare well and live by these rules will be directly proportional to the success of our time together.
